In this installment of our series, we will be speaking with Adriane Nada, a Domestic Violence Clinical Educator here at Laura’s House about the definition of love, and how it relates to domestic violence issues. In order to recover from domestic violence, one must learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy love. The question then arises, how can we begin to educate our clients on the differences without first defining and exploring the concept of love… especially when those that have experienced abuse claim to have been drawn to the abuser in the first place because of love? How can one trust love in the future when it has been so deceptive in the past?

The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children

Laura’s House is a community-based non-profit organization that empowers individuals and families to lead violence-free lives. We offer a comprehensive range of services including safe refuge for women and children escaping violent homes. We also offer legal support services, counseling, community education, and prevention workshops for teens on healthy relationships and dating violence.

In this installment of the Laura's House Podcast series, we will be speaking with Lily Habte, a therapist at Laura’s House, about the effects of domestic violence on children.

Studies have estimated that between 10 and 20 percent of children are at risk for exposure to domestic violence. Family violence creates a home environment where children live in constant fear, and children who witness family violence are impacted in ways that are similar to children who are physically abused. Additionally, children exposed to domestic violence at home are more likely to develop social, emotional, psychological and/or behavioral problems than those who are not. Recent research indicates that children who witness domestic violence show more anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, anger and temperament problems than children who do not witness violence in the home.

Elder Abuse and Violence Later in Life

Elder abuse is defined by the National Center on Elder Abuse as intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of an older adult, age 65 or older. These acts can include physical abuse; neglect; emotional and psychological abuse; verbal abuse and threats; financial abuse and exploitation; sexual abuse; and abandonment. In some cases, self-neglect also is considered mistreatment.

Recent studies have indicated that between one and two million Americans age 65 and older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection. It also is estimated that for every one case of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, or self-neglect reported to authorities, about five more go unreported.

Designed to educate the community on the issues surrounding elder abuse, this Podcast points to the rising incidence of elder abuse and the need for improved vigilance and prevention.
